As part of a trans-boundary ecosystem that includes

Glacier National Park, Waterton Park, the Whitefish Range

and the whole Flathead River drainage,  the North Fork

is packed with scenery and wildlife

and lots of ways to enjoy it.

Most visitors come to the area planning to do some hikes.

From Polebridge Ranch Cabins you are centrally located to do some fantastic hiking on

the west side of Glacier National Park and in the Flathead National Forest.

Explore active fire lookouts, waterfalls and if you are adventurous there are even some caves.

The national forest has hundreds of miles of roads and trails where you can get away from people while still enjoying the awesome scenery and wildlife.

Mountain biking is a terrific way to enjoy these same roads and trails.  Some of these roads are closed to motorized traffic and lead to spectacular vistas.  Wildlife, such as grizzlies, black bear, moose, wolves and mountain lions roam the same forest you will be venturing.  Keep your eyes open, your bear spray close and your camera handy.

Fly fishing is one of the top activities in the North Fork.  Fish for native Cutthroat or Whitefish on the river with your waders at any accessible point on the river or while floating the river.  Float or Kayak the North Fork of the Flathead River – Kick back and enjoy the view of the mountains and the wildlife as you float through the wilderness.  There are loads of put-ins and take-outs on the river from West Glacier to the Canadian border.  You can bring your own gear and plan your own trip on the river or sign-up with one of the river outfitters serving the area.  As a guest at Polebridge Ranch Cabins we can help with your plans.  Just being on the river makes for a rewarding day.

Photography is high on the list for many visitors.  The mountains produce wonderful light effects in the early mornings and the evenings enticing professional and amateur photographers alike.  With the abundance of wildlife in the area your opportunities are boundless.

Bird watching is a part of many of your activities.  Bald eagles, water ouzels, robber jays, hummingbirds and more, frequent the area in the summer.

Explore the Flathead Valley.  While most visitors are trying to escape populated areas some still enjoy visiting the dining and entertainment options that come with a town.  In our opinion, Whitefish, Bigfork, Kalispell, Columbia Falls and other towns are not ideally situated lodging options for daily visits to Glacier National Park (too much driving, too many people, not enough immersion in the natural environment).  However, we too like to go to town and enjoy an upscale dinner, a zip line ride, art galleries, etc.  Also the towns provide the best and most cost effective place to supply (re-supply) for your trip.  Polebridge Ranch Cabins locates you in the wilderness of the Glacier National Park complex but with a reasonable drive to occasionally enjoy the amenities of town.  We can help with recommendations for fine dining, terrific art galleries and where to best supply for groceries.

Kayak or Canoe one of the parks many lakes.  Bowman Lake and Kintla Lake are both remote lakes inside Glacier Park and great for water-based activities.  You’ll need to bring your own watercraft for these lakes since there are no rentals available there.

When hiking always carry your bear spray and use caution by making noise and paying close attention to your surroundings.  You would be surprised by the amount of wildlife you’ll see just by walking along the North Fork Road on which Polebridge Ranch Cabins is located.  Just a short distance up the road from Polebridge Ranch Cabins (.10 mile) is a “closed to motorized vehicles” road that accesses State of Montana owned public land.  You can walk this road as it gently climbs the mountainside.
